The “liver bird” is a mythical creature that has been the symbol for the city of Liverpool (pics) since it was first used on its corporate seal in 1350. It is generally represented as a cormorant-like bird and can be seen in various places around the city, most notably atop the twin towers of the Royal Liver Building. Legend has it that were these two birds to fly away then the city would cease to exist.
England
Leeds, England
As a result of a scheduling issue we spent one night in Leeds (pics), one of the UK’s fastest growing cities. Recent redevelopment efforts have transformed Leeds from near derelict mill town into skyscraping office blocks, waterfront apartment complexes and renovated Victorian shopping arcades.
York, England
York (pics) is England’s most medieval city with a web of narrow streets surrounded by magnificent 13th century walls. And at its center is the York Minster, one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world and England’s second most important cathedral.
Free Walking Tours
When we arrive in a new city, a walking tour is a great way to get introduced to the city and get oriented to special sights. Paid walking tours are available in most cities and can cost from $5 to $15 per person. In many places we are able to find free walking tours. There are two basic types of free walking tours.
