In Switzerland German is the primary language in the eastern 2/3 of the country and this includes the city of Lucerne. Lucerne has been described as perhaps the prettiest city in Switzerland and we can confirm that it is quite appealing. Like Geneva, Lucerne sits on a beautiful lake that bears its name and the Reuss River runs through the city.
From Anacortes, we headed north and crossed the Canadian border at Sumas, WA. Once across, we turned east to the town of Hope. This small town is on the Frasier River at the southern end of the Frasier Valley. This is a place of spectacular natural beauty. Near vertical granite mountains rise up in all directions. The Trans Canada Highway runs through the valley.
In 1848, Fort Hope was established by Hudson’s Bay Company at the trailhead for what is now known as HBC Heritage Trail. This trail was originally developed as a way to reach inland bypassing Frasier Valley since the valley walls were too steep to navigate. In the years following, the fur trade and the 1858 Frasier River Gold Rush supported Hope and its residents.
Yes, it’s true. Niagara Falls is amazing. It seems like that word is getting overused these days. Can a hamburger really be “amazing”? Let’s agree that Niagara Falls is truly amazing. It’s one of those wonders of nature that you have to experience in person to fully appreciate. After visiting Niagara Falls and Iguazú Falls (in August 2013), we have now seen two of the world’s three most spectacular waterfalls with Victoria Falls remaining for a future trip. Niagara Falls, consisting of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls, is tops in terms of vertical drop combined with water volume but the 1.7 miles long series of waterfalls at Iguazú deserves its own type of amazing.
