Quartzsite is a unique place. It is located in the Arizona desert at the intersection of US 95 and Interstate 10. There is a history of mining in the area around Quartzsite which led to an annual rock and gem show here during the winter. This grew in popularity to the point where more and more people came for the show, particularly in RVs.
Here I parked at the Casa Grande RV Resort. It’s pretty typical of the Arizona resorts that cater to the snowbirds. Casa Grande is located south of Phoenix. When we came through this part of Arizona earlier in 2016, we stayed in Eloy (south of Casa Grande) and in Mesa, AZ, which is east of Phoenix.
This photo doesn’t quite capture the moment, but this is sunrise from the RV park.
Next stop: Quartzsite, AZ
Continuing my journey west, I stopped in Willcox, AZ. While here I parked at the Magic Circle RV Park. Earlier in 2016, we stopped over in Benson, AZ, which is about 30 miles west of Willcox. From Benson we visited, Tombstone, Bisbee and Kartchner Caverns.
Kartchner Caverns, near Benson, Arizona, is a relatively recently discovered series of limestone caves. In 1974, two amateur cavers found a crack in the bottom of a sinkhole that was emitting warm moist air that smelled faintly of bat guano. They opened the crack to the width of a coat hanger and squeezed themselves through. What they discovered was well beyond their expectations.
