Playa del Carmen is about 60 miles south of the Cancun airport. It is in the heart of this lovely stretch of coastline known as the Riviera Maya. This area encompasses the coastline along the eastern side of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The coast is lined with a series of beach resorts and tourist attractions.
Playa del Carmen is one of the larger towns in the Riviera Maya. It provides the primary ferry service out to the island of Cozumel and has been growing rapidly in the past few years.
We arrived here from the Pacific coast of Mexico following the completion of our two month house sitting in Barra de Navidad. We flew on Aeromexico from Manzanillo, connecting in Mexico City and then on the Cancun. From the Cancun airport, we took a regular bus service directly from the airport to Playa del Carmen.
Besides the typically beautiful beach, Playa del Carmen has an extensive tourist walking street which is lined with all manner of restaurants, bars, stores selling silver and all varieties of souvenir crafts and novelties. Each one seems to have a tout in front urging you to spend a little of your time and perhaps your money in their establishment.
We spent two nights here before heading further south on the Belize.
